Gpush brings the iPhone up to Blackberry standards for email (for Gmail users)

Switching from the Blackberry to the iPhone can be a tough choice. After all the Blackberry has the super fast “Push” email system for Gmail, right? Wrong… Blackberry users get a simulated Push client for Gmail because the carriers (in my case At&t) provide a server that you use to put in your Gmail credentials then *THAT SERVER* continually checks your Gmail and then pushes a notification to you in what seems like real time. I am in no way disparaging this service, since; it works great and saves your phones battery. You see, without the service you have to set your phone to check your email (for example) every 15 minutes. This is an elaborate, and lengthy login and authentication process that eats battery life. This is the same way you have to check your email with the iPhone client UNTIL Gpush came along.

Gpush is a 99 cent app that gives you that same “my server is doing that” battery savings to check your email account that you get with a Blackberry. Besides the battery savings is the matter of speed, Gpush allows you to get a real-time notification of an email as an alert on your iPhone (like an SMS message). Well, close to real-time, less than a minute in all my tests… I love it and find it very useful. The developers are going to be adding the ability to change the alert sound in an upcoming update (which is my only current complaint). Gpush is available in Apples app store now.

Update: After installing Gpush, you will no longer need the email sound, so go to settings, sounds, and toggle of "New Mail" or you will get a redundant "ding" after you open your mail since you already heard the Gpush alert sound. Also, go to Settings, Mail, Fetch New Data and change Fetch to "Manually" to see the battery savings.

Update 2011: This product is no longer needed since iPhone now supports native Push.
