Doubling My Internet Speeds: Upgrading from AT&T 1Gb to 2Gb Fiber

The need for speed is real, my friends. As someone who often works from home and streams a lot of shows, I was hitting the limits of my AT&T 1Gb fiber internet plan. I love fiber - it's fast, reliable, and has way lower latency than cable internet. But I was tired of buffering wheels and work video calls glitching out. It was time to upgrade and get that sweet, sweet symmetrical 2Gbps speed.

The Upgrade Process: Upgrading with AT&T Fiber turned out to be surprisingly easy. I logged into my account online and saw the 2Gb plan was only $20 more per month. A small price to pay for double the speed! The customer service rep said a technician would have to come out to swap out my gateway/router to handle the faster speeds. He came a few days later and it only took him about 10 minutes to replace the equipment. Easy peasy.

Real-World Speed Differences:

After upgrading, I immediately noticed the difference. Downloads finished 3x faster, web pages loaded instantly, and streaming 4K video was flawless. I did a speed test and saw speeds consistently hit 1.8Gbps up and down. Of course latency and other factors affect real-world speeds, but this was a massive improvement over my previous 200-500Mbps downloads on the 1Gb plan. The 2Gb fiber lived up to its name.

Was It Worth It?

For an extra $20 a month, I'm getting double the internet speeds and my connectivity is rock-solid. Streaming and video calls are glitch-free now even when the family is using multiple devices. Downloading games and huge files is blazing fast. So yes, I'd say the upgrade was totally worth it for my uses! The only downside is that now I'm tempted to upgrade again when 5Gb or 10Gb plans become available. The need for speed never stops!

Don't forget, you will need to make sure if you use a switch that it supports the same speed as your internet (or greater) I used this one HERE (We get a small fee if you buy from one of our links but that does not impact our impartial reviews) Also, check out this review of my mini PC with an updated 2.5gb ethernet port here.

Have you upgraded to faster fiber internet? Let me know your experiences in the comments! I'm curious to hear how the speed boost helped your internet activities.
