LG Vu, the most anticipated at&t phone since the iPhone?

I got a hands on look at the LG VU (pronounced "view") at the 2008 CTIA show and to put it mildly, I am very excited about this phone. Not just an iPhone clone, this phone is a ROCK SOLID iPhone clone with COOL NEW FEATURES! The most important and exciting new feature is the Mediaflo that adds TV surfing to your phone (with "cable style guide", no less). Mediaflo has already been made available on Verizon, however, at&t is adding an additional two exclusive channels, CNN and the "Sony Pix" movie channel to its lineup.

Blackjack II review, sometimes called Blackjack 2

The Blackjack II is a stunningly capable phone. It is better than the Blackjack I in almost every way with only a few minor issues. It is faster, with Windows Mobile 6, has an improved keyboard, has a built in GPS chip, repeat, it has a built in GPS chip, this is a huge feature that makes it better than an iPhone in my eyes. It has a better Camera (a 2 megapixel) and it has ditched the side jog wheel for a d-pad with an integrated scrolling wheel, that acts just like a classic ipod for scrolling. Telenav with the phone is a marvel as it uses live traffic data to re-route you if there is an accident or just lots of traffic. Telenav is, of course, great and also a fine feature upgrade, but, there is also a new free program that will work with the phone that is CLOSE to Telenavs functionality. The new Live Search Mobile, by Microsoft, works great and has a cool new speech interface (say, “Marriot” and it shows you the closest Marriot). Remember the classic iPhone commercial where the guy ...

Telenav, GPS, Google Maps and Gold

I used Telenav for the first time over the weekend on my trip to Gulf Breeze and I have to say that I was very impressed. Some of the things I liked about it included the fact that I did not have to load any maps in advance (you get these via the Internet on your device). The voice directions were great. She says, “Turn right on Washington street in one minute”, not just “Turn right” like some all in one units. Also, I found a hotel by searching for nearby hotels from the device in the store parking lot and then driving to the one that was the shortest drive. Since the data all comes from the Internet, they can update roads, restaurants and hotels on the server and your not forced into a cycle of buying new maps every year, but, at $99 a year the savings is not that great versus buying stand alone GPS software. I used it with my Blackjack and a separate GPS “puck”. A couple of years ago, I would have used my hw6500, the HP monstrosity with the built in GPS chip, but that was ret...

My first week in the Cingular Blackjack phone

The name Blackjack is (of course) meant to bring the Blackberry to mind and for good reason. The Blackjack is an email dynamo. The only reason we have ever recommended Blackberry’s in the past is they are email work horses. Other phones have had trouble sending email (cwmx.com anyone?) or trouble supporting corporate email accounts. The Blackjack uses Cingular’s new 3G network and it sends and receives emails very, very smoothly. Another important point, when it checks email (via 3G) it does *not* create static in speakers like GSM/EDGE devices (finally). The GSM static had reached a new low for me recently when I heard it through an electric guitar amp, not something I will miss. The email is perfect, but, the killer application for this device is VIDEO. Video on this phone is simply awesome. It features links to free video like a CNN feed that is about 5 minutes long and is updated about every 2 hours with the latest highlights. The video simply works and that alone changes t...
